In early November, the victim was driving just before midnight when he reached an intersection in downtown Cedar Rapids. He decelerated and stopped at the yellow light, and that’s when another driver struck his vehicle from behind, pushing him into the intersection. According to police, the driver, who was a young woman in her late 20s, got out of her car and approached the man, asking if he was okay.

He told her that he wasn’t and said he needed help. The victim claims the woman then fled the scene, leaving him with a totaled car. He has a history of scoliosis, so he went to the hospital to ensure everything was in order, and medical staff released him a few hours later; however, the man’s pain worsened in the weeks that followed. 

The accident victim visited his doctor and learned that he had fractured his spine and would need major surgery. He is now bedridden at a local hospital, facing extensive rehab, not to mention uncertainly regarding a full recovery. The police are still investigating the crash and urge anyone with information to contact them.

Rollover Crash Injures Two

According to KCRG, a car was heading west on Highway 30 late last week when it crashed, resulting in a rollover. Responders took two people involved to a local hospital, one with serious injuries. Authorities had to close the highway surrounding the scene for more than four hours; police are still investigating the crash.

Fatal Crash Occurred During a Statewide Blizzard Warning

According to court records, a multi-vehicle crash that has now resulted in a wrongful death lawsuit occurred on Dec. 20, when there was a statewide blizzard warning. Two semi-tractor trailer drivers allegedly lost control of their vehicles, which proceeded to block traffic on Interstate 35. The lawsuit contends that a third vehicle carrying a woman and several children crashed into one of the semis before the driver could brake on time. 

The driver got out and was trying to move his children to safety when a third tractor-trailer lost control at the scene, crushing the man’s vehicle—with his fiancée still in it—against one of the other trucks. Court records state 15 vehicles in total were involved in the accident. The woman in the first car died, as did a pregnant woman who was later involved in the crash site, when she got out of her own car to check on her son in the backseat. 

The first man, whose fiancée died in the crash, is suing the truck drivers, as well as the companies that employed them. The wrongful death lawsuit claims that State Patrol determined all of the vehicles in the initial crash were not traveling at safe speeds consistent with road conditions at the time of the accident.

Iowa Family Believes Their Relative Was a Victim of Faulty Airbags

According to KCRG, a family in Cedar Rapids is incredibly interested in the current airbag recall debate, because they believe their relative’s death in 2003 could be linked to the defective airbags. Many believe the airbags in question expand with too much force when they deploy during an accident. Takata, the manufacturer, missed a deadline that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued regarding expanding the voluntary recall from states with high humidity nationwide, and they had to attend yet another hearing in D.C. earlier this week.

Honda officials have decided they are not going to wait for the supplier to issue the recall, and they are launching a national recall of all Honda vehicles that have the suspected airbags. There have been dozens of injuries and at least five deaths linked to the allegedly defective airbags.

Two Killed, One Injured in Iowa Crash

According to KCRG, the Iowa State Patrol has confirmed that two people have died and a third was injured in a single-vehicle crash. Troopers reported that a 58-year-old woman was driving a Chevrolet Silverado on Highway 65 when she lost control of the truck and rolled it into a ditch. At the time, there was also a 43-year-old passenger in the front seat, and responders reported her and the driver dead at the scene. They also rushed a second passenger, a 16-year-old boy with serious injuries, to a local hospital. 

Cedar Rapids Police Come Upon a Crash, Results in Arrest for One of the Drivers

KWWL reports on a crash that occurred earlier this month and resulted in an arrest for one of the drivers involved. According to the news source, police came upon the crash and eventually had to chase down one of the drivers. Officers were performing standard patrols near Wilson Avenue and Kenrich Drive SW when they saw two vehicles collide. 

One of the drivers ran from the scene, but officers were able to catch him a short while later. Police arrested the 21-year-old man and charged him with interference with official acts that caused injury. He was also arrested on a warrant that was outstanding for a probation violation, as well as warrants for willful injury, first-degree robbery, fifth-degree theft and assault while participating in a felony. 

Police are still investigating the accident. They say that further charges may be filed against the driver who fled. 

One Killed and One Injured in Crash

According to KCRG, one person has died after a UPS semitrailer crashed into a minivan at an intersection earlier this week. Police claim the truck was heading north when it struck the van, which was heading east. Responders pronounced one person in the van dead at the scene and took another to a local hospital with minor injuries. 

The driver of the semitrailer was not seriously injured. Police are still investigating the crash.

Elderly Couple Dies in Accident

KCRG reports on a fatal collision between a minivan and two semitrailers that occurred late last week. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened around 4 p.m. in the afternoon, when an 88-year-old man failed to stop at an intersection. His 84-year-old wife was in the car.

The couple was heading south through the intersection on a county road when a truck heading eastbound struck the minivan, spinning it into the path of another truck. Responders pronounced both the man and his wife dead at the scene. The truckers were not injured, and police are still investigating the accident. 

Collision Sends Two to Hospital

KWWL reports on a collision that occurred late last week at the intersection of 16th Avenue and 80th Street SW in Cedar Rapids. According to police, a 50-year-old man who was driving a GMC Sierra truck and heading northbound pulled into the intersection when an 86-year-old man driving a Buick Regal heading westbound struck him. The Buick driver had his wife in the car, and neither was wearing a seatbelt. 

Responders rushed both the man and woman to Mercy Hospital, where staff treated them for serious injuries. The driver of the truck refused treatment at the scene, and police are still investigating the crash.

Rollover Crash Kills One

According to KCRG, the Iowa State Patrol responded to an accident scene earlier this month to find the remnants of a rollover crash. Police found the 27-year-old driver after he had failed to navigate a turn safely and rolled into a ditch instead. 

Authorities claim the vehicle rolled over twice before striking a telephone pole and coming to a stop. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, and responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to FOX News, witnesses suspect the truck driver of being distracted. They say that the male driver was carrying a female passenger in his cab, and she was not wearing any clothes during the accident. Furthermore, investigators determined that the truck driver did not even press his brakes before colliding with the bus, possibly indicating that he did not see the vehicle. Paramedics took 10 of the children to the hospital with varying degrees of injury. Officers say that the accident would have been much worse had the bus driver not seen the truck and sped up at the last moment before the impact.

Another Bus-Truck Accident Ended in Tragedy

The NY Post reports that the occupants of another bus were not as lucky as the children. Police say that a tractor trailer veered into oncoming traffic and struck a bus carrying a college softball team. The collision sent more than a dozen people to the hospital, and four members of the softball team died from their injuries. Police are not sure what caused the truck driver to leave his lane, but they have drawn his blood to test for intoxication.
