Personal-injury cases sometimes make the mainstream news, but these are typically the more sensational ones. Few people realize just how useful a personal-injury lawyer can be, and relying on the skills of someone qualified in this field can often lead to settlements that will allow you to return to your old way of life.
There are several reasons why you may want to consult a personal-injury lawyer, but their primary purpose is to help you navigate the complex legal world following a serious accident or injury. Under some circumstances, you may benefit from having an expert to evaluate an accident that an insurance company is refusing to cover.

Here are three common reasons why people consult personal-injury lawyers:
1. Long-Term Injuries and Disabilities
Many accidents cause injuries that can last for years or even a lifetime. According to the Office of Personnel Management, many disabilities require long-term care, some of which they cover via their Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program. Claiming insurance or compensation for serious, long-term injuries can be difficult and overwhelming, and many cases require an experienced lawyer to look through the case and establish just how much the victim deserves.
2. Medical Malpractice
Medical malpractice falls under personal-injury law, and it occurs when a health-care institution, doctor or other health-care professional provides negligent or unprofessional treatment, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. This could range from misdiagnosis to insufficient care. When it comes to claiming compensation from the negligent professional, victims almost always need a lawyer at their side to help them with the legal process.
3. Serious Injuries
If you sustained serious injuries in an accident at the hands of a negligent individual, there is a good chance you are eligible to claim compensation for your expenses. In many cases, a lawyer can help with the claim process in order to ensure that it is fair and that you receive adequate compensation for your injuries.
Regardless of the severity or nature of your injuries, it is important to contact a Cedar Rapids accident attorney for advice. At Eells & Tronvold Law Offices, PLC, we specialize in personal-injury and accident law, and we can evaluate your case and determine if you may have a valid claim for medical expenses or lost wages.

Many people misunderstand statutes of limitations or believe they are universal across the country. These misunderstandings are largely due to the fact that each state has its own variations of the laws, and most criminal and civil suits have different time restrictions.

If you have specific questions about an injury or accident, a Cedar Rapids personal injury lawyer can help. Here is some more information regarding statutes of limitations in the state of Iowa:
Statutes of Limitations Defined
The University of Iowa defines statutes of limitations as laws that govern how long you can wait before filing a civil lawsuit, as well as how long the state has to prosecute an individual for committing a crime. These time limits depend on the specific claim or crime, and each state has its own variation of the laws.
Typically, the start date of your claim is from when it first arises, such as on the day of the injury or accident. A court cannot prosecute you nor can you file a civil lawsuit against an individual or company once the statute of limitations has expired.
Civil ClaimsEvery civil claim has its own statute of limitations, but the Iowa Legislature covers most key concerns. If you are considering filing a civil lawsuit, it is important to check the Iowa Legislature website and ensure that the statue of limitations on your particular case has not yet expired.
Your Iowa personal-injury lawyer will also have a thorough understanding of how long you have to file a claim for your specific injuries. In the state of Iowa, you can file personal-injury claims for up to two years following the accident. The same is true for concerns regarding product liability and wrongful death suits.
If you are suffering from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident because of someone else’s negligence, you may be able to claim for medical expenses and lost income. An experienced Cedar Rapids accident attorney can take you through the applicable car crash laws and determine if you are eligible for compensation.

5 Steps to Take When Dealing with a Slip and Fall on Someone Else’s Property

1. Visit a Doctor
You may be tempted to wait and see how serious your injuries are, but experts at the United States Department of Labor suggest that slips and trips can be serious, and they can even be fatal. Research claims that slips and falls cause 15 percent of all accidental deaths in America.
2. Gather Evidence
It is important that you gather as much information about the location where you fell as possible. Photographs are particularly important, and they can make the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful claim. Take photographs of the obstacle or hazard that caused you to fall before anyone interferes with the scene.
According to the National Floor Safety Institute, 85 percent of worker’s compensation claims are from employees who slip on slick floors. While this may not be easy to photograph, it is still important to record the location in the form of a photograph for future investigations.
3. Find Witnesses
If you fell in a public place, there is a good chance someone witnessed your fall. Get the contact details of any witnesses, including names and addresses, and ask them for any additional information that you might have missed.
4. File a Report
It is important that you record your fall with managers, supervisors or security officers if the fall happened on commercial property. If any emergency officials or police attended to the scene, get a report from them as well.
5. Keep All Medical Records
Keep all medical bills and records. You may be eligible for compensation for these injuries, and it will be easier to claim if you have all of the necessary medical paperwork.
If you slip and fall on someone else’s property, give a qualified Cedar Rapids accident attorney a call. At Eells & Tronvold Law Offices, PLC, we will evaluate your claim and establish if it can stand up in court. Call us today at 319-393-1020 to schedule a free consultation.

Icy Roads Cause Multiple Crashes in Iowa
According to KWWL, sheriff’s deputies claim icy conditions are the cause of multiple crashes across the state. Earlier this month, a one-car crash occurred just after 7 a.m. in the morning. A 36-year-old man was driving a 2004 Dodge Durango when he lost control of the vehicle presumably due to icy conditions.
According to police, the vehicle rolled several times before coming to a stop in the middle of the road. Responders took the driver to a local hospital where medical staff treated him for non-life threatening injuries. Police say the driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
CBS2IOWA reports on another icy crash that occurred earlier this month, which injured one. According to police, the crash occurred shortly after 1 in the afternoon at the intersection of Fox Meadow Drive southeast and East Post Road. A 25-year-old man was driving south when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over the center line of the road, hitting another vehicle heading north.
Neither driver sustained serious injuries, but responders had to take a passenger in the 25-year-old’s car to the hospital. Medical staff treated the passenger for non-life threatening injuries. Police are still investigating the crash.
Semi-Trailer Truck Crash Sends Two to Hospital, Closes Highway
KCRG9 reports on a collision between two semi-trailer trucks that occurred late last month on Highway 13. According to police, the crash occurred at around 2 in the morning. A 63-year-old man driving a semi rear-ended another semi that a 62-year-old was driving.
Police say the man who caused the accident failed to see that the semi in front of him was pulling to the side, and he did not decelerate fast enough. Responders took both drivers to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, where medical staff treated them for non-life threatening injuries. Police had to close the northbound right lane to clean the crash, but they were able to reopen it the following day.
