Iowa Crash Fatalities up From 2013
Though fatal crashes in Iowa were more common in 2014 than they were in 2013, the numbers demonstrate a general downward trend from 2001. State officials claim that 319 people died on Iowa roads in 2014, which is more than the 317 victims in 2013. However, those numbers are down nearly 30 percent from 2001, when 446 people died on state and federal roads across Iowa.
The National Center for Statistics and Analysis surveyed Americans to gauge just how safe they were on the roads. Researchers found that 87 percent of respondents claimed to use seatbelts in 2013. That represents a 27-percent increase from the number of people who said they wore seatbelts in 1995.
Police Identify the Victim of a Fatal Crash
KCRG reports on a fatal car accident that left one man dead. According to police, the 27-year-old victim was heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 20 when his vehicle veered off the road and into a ditch. The car rolled before coming to a stop.
The accident occurred at night, and passersby did not spot it nor report it until 11 a.m. the following morning. Police are still investigating the cause of the single-vehicle crash.
Elderly Woman Dies After Crash
According to KCRG, an 84-year-old woman died from injuries she sustained in a car accident late last month. Police claim the woman was traveling west on Highway 62 early one afternoon when she lost control of her vehicle. She veered off of the road and into the ditch, where the car hit an embankment and rolled several times before coming to a stop on its side.
Rescuers were able to remove the woman from the wreckage, and they transported her to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Police are still investigating the crash.
Though Americans are generally safer now than they were just one decade ago, accidents can and do still occur. Defensive driving is still the most effective way to avoid accidents, but some crashes are unavoidable. Serious injuries can leave victims with insurmountable medical bills, and they may not be able to return to work. Fortunately, an accident attorney may be able to help.
