While many find Drones, also known as a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), to be intriguing and exciting, others are learning about the dangers associated with these flying “toys.” Just last month, a mother and her one-year-old son were playing at Crow Park in Bettendorf, Iowa when something unexpected occurred.
According to Davenport Patch, Cassandra Roberts and her son Atticus were on the swings when a “drone hit the swings he was playing on and smacked the one-year-old in the face.” The drone was said to be a decent size and had four propellers. The impact left the child with a deep gash on his right cheek that was bleeding as well as injuries to his upper lip. Apparently, the operators of the drone who were said to be in their 20’s lost control of it while flying it in the soccer field located in the park. They were also with a male and female couple in their 50’s or 60’s.

The two drone operators allegedly came over to apologize but the hysterical mother was too occupied with tending to her injured child and neglected to get their names. Roberts eventually got her son to the hospital where he received three stitches to close the cut on his cheek and two for the injury he sustained on his lip. She then filed a police report and officials identified the two operators after putting out a “plea for the public’s help of Facebook.”
Roberts told the news source that it would be more likely to expect her child to fall off the playground equipment, before being hit with a drone. She also said that the accident “should not have happened.” While it isn’t clear whether the two will face any charges for the incident, there is a chance they might as the source says it is “illegal under city ordinance to fly a drone in a public park.”
